You feel the edge catch on something, a sweater, a car door, the corner of a desk, and there it is: a lifted acrylic, a visible gap between the enhancement and your natural nail. The reflex is instant. Grab the nail glue, squeeze it into the gap, press down hard, move on with your day. It's fast, it's free, and it's the fix every nail-repair video on your feed swears by. What almost nobody checks first is what's actually sitting in that gap before they seal it shut, and that's the part that decides whether this fix helps you or quietly causes a problem three weeks from now. What's actually trapped under a lifted acrylic nail
A lifted acrylic nail is a gap. That's the whole mechanical fact of it, a separation between the acrylic enhancement and the natural nail plate underneath, usually starting at the free edge or a side wall and working its way back. What fills that gap in the hours or days before you notice it is the actual variable. Sometimes it's nothing, just air, and the acrylic separated cleanly with no debris involved. More often it's shower water, dish soap, sweat, or whatever you touched that day, wicking in through capillary action every time your hand gets wet.
That moisture doesn't evaporate the way it would on open skin. Sealed under a rigid acrylic layer, it sits. Given enough time and warmth, a damp, dark, low-oxygen pocket like that becomes exactly the environment certain bacteria prefer. The one nail techs mention most often is green nail syndrome, caused by Pseudomonas bacteria, which shows up as a green or grey stain spreading under the nail plate, usually two to three weeks after the moisture got trapped, not immediately. That delay is exactly why the problem so often gets missed at the moment of gluing. Whatever caused the lift already happened, and whatever's growing underneath has a two-to-three-week head start before it becomes visible.
Cyanoacrylate nail glue itself is not what causes this. It's an inert, fast-curing adhesive, the same chemistry family as household super glue, and it has no bacterial or fungal activity of its own. Gluing over a gap that already has trapped moisture, debris, or early bacterial growth in it is what causes it, because the glue seals that environment in rather than letting it dry out or get treated. The nail plate itself has no blood supply and can't fight infection the way skin can, so once something is sealed underneath it, it tends to stay there and spread rather than resolve on its own.
