Cuticle lifting: it's almost always a prep problem
If the gap starts right where the acrylic meets your skin, near the cuticle, the cause is almost always contact with moisture or oil that got trapped under the product before it cured. This can happen even when you primed correctly, because priming addresses the nail plate itself, not skin contact that happens seconds later during application.
The most common version of this: hands in water. Washing dishes, cleaning, even just frequent handwashing in the days right after application, before the acrylic has had time to fully harden and seal at the cuticle line. Water works its way under that thin edge and the bond fails from underneath, invisibly at first, then visibly.
There's a dehydration-step problem hiding here too. Nail dehydrator removes natural oils and moisture from the plate before primer goes on. Skip it, rush it, or apply primer before the dehydrator has actually finished doing its job, and the primer bonds to a surface that isn't fully prepped, which shows up exactly as cuticle-area lifting a few days later.
Worth knowing: dip powder has its own, different cuticle-lifting pattern, so if you've switched systems and expected the same causes to carry over, they don't always.
The fix going forward isn't more primer. It's protecting that cuticle line from water for the first 24 to 48 hours, and being genuinely thorough, not fast, with dehydration before primer touches the nail.
Sidewall lifting: your liquid-to-powder ratio is off
Lifting along the sides of the nail, rather than at the cuticle or tip, points somewhere else entirely: the liquid-to-powder ratio used when the acrylic bead was applied. Too wet a bead spreads thin and weak along the sidewalls. Too dry a bead doesn't self-level properly into that curve, leaving a seam that was never fully sealed in the first place.
This is a technique variable, not a product-quality one. The same acrylic system can produce a flawless set or a lifting one depending entirely on how the bead was mixed and placed at that specific point on the nail. Sidewalls are a tighter, more curved area than the flat nail bed, so a ratio that works fine centrally can still fail there.
You'll often notice this pattern is symmetrical, both hands, roughly the same spot, because it's a repeated technique choice rather than a one-off contamination issue like cuticle lifting tends to be. That symmetry is actually a useful diagnostic on its own.
Day-to-day impact matters less here than it does for the other two causes. Someone with a low-impact daily routine can still get sidewall lifting purely from the ratio, which is part of why this cause gets missed so often. People assume lifting means they were too rough on their hands, when the actual cause was set the moment the bead went on.
If this is your pattern, the adjustment isn't behavioural, it's technical: a slightly thicker bead, more deliberate pressure into the sidewall curve, and enough working time before the product starts to set.
Lifting right at the very tip, the free edge, is the one cause that has nothing to do with skin contact or product ratio. This is structural, and it usually comes down to one of two things: where the apex sits on the nail, or whether the free edge was properly capped during application.
The apex is the highest point of the acrylic arch, and it needs to sit roughly two-thirds of the way up the nail, not right at the tip. When it's placed too far forward, the free edge becomes thin and unsupported, flexing every time you use your hands, and flexing is exactly what breaks a bond over and over until it visibly lifts.
Capping means sealing a thin layer of product completely over the free edge rather than stopping short of it. An uncapped tip leaves the most-used, most-exposed part of the nail with the weakest seal on the entire nail, which is precisely backwards given how much stress that edge takes daily.
