Most people assume more dip powder means a thicker, tackier finish, so they brush off the excess fast and move straight to the next coat. That habit is the single biggest reason dip nails crack. A proper set needs several full dip-tap-activate cycles per nail, not one or two, because each cycle only adds a thin layer of bonded powder, and it takes real stacked thickness to give the finished nail the structural depth it needs to survive an ordinary week of typing, opening jars and pulling on socks. Skip a cycle or brush too aggressively between coats, and the finished nail looks identical to a properly built one under the top coat. It only reveals itself later, at the exact point where it is thinnest, usually somewhere across the stress line that runs beneath the fingertip.
There is a simple way to tell before it fails. Press gently on the tip of a freshly finished nail. A correctly built dip nail barely gives. If it flexes even slightly under light pressure, the cross-section underneath is too thin to hold. Hold your hand up to a bright light and look for any hint of the natural nail plate showing through, since that translucency is a direct sign the powder layer has not built up enough density. A set that feels papery, light or slightly hollow rather than substantial and dense is a set that is already on borrowed time, whatever the surface looks like. No apex, no strength: why flat nails crack first
An apex is not decorative. It is the single ridge of extra thickness built deliberately into the nail, usually just behind the smile line, and it works the same way an arch works in architecture: it takes a flat, weak plane and gives it a load-bearing high point that spreads pressure outward instead of letting it collect in one spot. A nail with a proper apex flexes very slightly under everyday pressure, then springs back, because the stress travelling through it has somewhere to go. A completely flat nail has nowhere for that stress to go. Every knock, every typed keystroke, every jar lid twisted open sends pressure straight through the thinnest, flattest part of the plate, and because there is no engineered high point to redirect it, that pressure collects at a single weak spot until the structure gives.

Capping mistakes that cause horizontal splits at the tip
A crack near the tip is a different problem from a crack in the middle of the nail bed, and it almost always traces back to the cap, not the apex. Capping means sealing the free edge itself in powder and activator so the layered structure underneath is fully enclosed rather than left as an exposed cross-section at the very tip. Skip that seal, or rush it, and the tip becomes the thinnest, most unprotected point on the entire nail, taking every direct knock first: unlocking a phone, prying open a can tab, catching a keyboard edge.
The most common capping mistake is treating it as a finishing touch rather than a structural step. A quick, thin swipe of powder along the edge looks fine under top coat but leaves little real thickness sealing that vulnerable cross-section. Filing afterwards makes it worse when done heavily, since an aggressive hand at the tip can file straight through a cap that was already thin, exposing the same weak edge it was meant to protect. An unsealed or under-capped tip also lets water sit against that exposed layered edge every hand wash, and repeated swelling and drying there is exactly the kind of stress that turns a hairline weakness into a full horizontal split within days. A properly capped tip feels like one continuous surface running over the edge, with no ridge, no thin patch and no visible seam where powder meets natural nail.
